Book 3: Gold, Frankensence and Myrrh

This anthology, published by Ellora’s Cave in 2003, contains three stories, each running along a Christmas theme. I started it during the holiday season, but put it aside for other books once the holidays were through.

“A Gift of Gold” by Ann Jacobs is a pleasant little story, if you like erotica. If you like plot, you should skip to the Cassie Walder story, because this story? pretty much lacks a plot. Basically, Lord Gavin’s supposed to marry a woman he’s heard is fat and ugly, and his lady wife, Evelyn, who is indeed fat, decides to seduce him, just to see if he’ll be repulsed by her, and then ends up sharing him with his twin brother. By the way, the only way to tell these particular twins apart is by the genetal piercings they’ve both got.

I found this story hillarious, though unintentionally so. I mean, really, WTF? The only way to tell your twin sons apart is to pierce their genetals in different ways? Hoookay. C+, although it would have been a straight C except for the genetal piercing part.

“A Gift of Frankensense” by Cassie Walder was my favorite story in the collection. it’s set during the rule of England by Oliver Cromwell, and Walder clearly did her research. The prose and dialogue feel authentic, and the conflict between our hero and heroine felt natural rather than, say, the conflict in the third story. This was the only couple I was really rooting for, and the only couple I thought might actually get a happily ever after. A for this one.

“A Gift of Myrrh” by Jody Copeland… There’s not much to say about this one. It’s just… meh. Our hero and heroine both come out of the Scottish branch of central casting. They each have about four brain cells to split between them, and there are all kinds of big misunderstandings. C- for this one, because it was just so meh I’ve already forgotten the characters’ names.

Overall, I’d say the anthology rates about a C. The Walder story is the only one worth bothering with. The rest are easily skippable.

Hehe

My brother left me a myspace comment that said, “Happy birthday you degenerate slut.” I’m amused by that. Quite a bit.

Book 2: Cordelia’s Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold

I absolutely loved this book. I’ve squeed a little about it, but, yes, it was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I’m really glad there’s more to the series to look forward to, because I loved Cordelia and Aral as characters, and have been led to believe that I will love Miles even more. Definitely an A+.

Random miscellany

OMG potential ASOIAF TV series!

All I gotta say is, I am so there!

Also, about halfway through Barayar by Lois McMaster Bujold, I was struck by the fact that Droushnakovi = Brienne of Tarth, only, y’know, from the future. (Note to self: This is not a good reason to app Droushnakovi at Hogwarts Hocus).

Also, I am officially out of alcohol.:(

Hello, new fandom.

I should listen to you people when you make book recommendations.

I’ve just started reading Lois McMaster Bujold’;s Cordelia’s Honor and I love it muchly. I haven’t gotten far, but I think it’ll be a good fit, mostly because Cordelia Naismith, our erstwhile protagonist, is clearly a strong woman who doesn’t need to go around bellowing, “Hey guys! Look! I’m a STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER! Look how pretty and special I am.” Nah, she just seems to do whatever needs doing. Also, the romance in this book is great. The two characters in question actually spend time talking to each other instead of going from “I hate you” to “Let’s have sex.”

More coherent, formulated thoughts as I keep reading.

Book 1 of 2007

Title: The Stand
Author: Stephen King
Thoughts: Well, I’ve pretty much offered up my nitpicks earlier, but really, wanky opinions aside, I adore this book. It was still hard to read some of the climactic passages, because this time I knew what would happen to all the characters, but still… very awesome start to 2007.

Grade: A

Note to self.

Keep looking for copies of anything Caitlin R. Kiernan has written. Both Shantih and Kristen recommend her highly, so you will probably like her.

In other news, I wish LochJournal supported tagging posts.

Bookish sreevay!

There were two surveys on this particular entry, but I have a short attention span, and I didn’t like the way the first one was worded, so I’m skipping.

1. One book that changed your life?
Alice in Wonderland because that’s the book, along with The Wizard of Oz that started me on my path to reading fantasy.

2. One book you have read more than once?
A Wrinkle in Time by L’Engle.
3. One book you would want on a desert island?
Probably A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin.
4. One book that made you laugh?
Big Trouble by Dave Barry.
5. One book that made you cry?
Books rarely make me cry. But there might have been tears at the end of Perfect by Judith McNaut, which really means I’m an incurable saphead.
6. One book you wish had been written?
Something like Anne McCaffrey’s Freedom books, about modern humans being enslaved by aliens, only, well, not written by McCaffrey. I’m sure sudch a book exists, and you can feel free to recommend me titles in the comments.
7. One book you wish had never been written?
I forget the author, thank Jeebus, but there was a book called The Boss’s Christmas Seduction that I yoinked an etext of off of Usenet. It was bad. Very, very bad.
8. One book you are currently reading?
Besides The Stand I’m reading Cordelia’s Honor by Bujold.
9. One book you have been meaning to read?
Actually, the Vorkosigan books have been on my “I should really read this” list for quite a while. I intend to dive in after I finish The Stand and see if all the people on my flist who’ve ever clamored for me to read those books are in fact, correct. I suspect, of course, that y’all are.

The Stand, uncut

Right now I’m reading the uncut version of The Stand , which I’m finding to be kind of a letdown. I really wish King hadn’t tried to “update the book for a modern audience” because he really did a shitty job of it, if you ask me. In fact, every time he mentions the 80’s at all, it feels tacked on. Also, I tend to take issue with what he did choose to add in.

I could have done without the chapter from Sally Campion’s point of view. I thought the point where the Campions’ car plows into Hap’s Texaco was far more interesting. Also, I really didn’t think hearing about the Trashcan Man’s journey to Vegas and his meeting the Kid was particularly necessary, either. Then again, that passage also bothered me because there’s a random gratuitous homosexual encounter, and I feel a bit like King equates homosexuality to insanity. (And yes, I know there’s a gay character in Cell , but I never finished that book and really have no intention of doing so.)

So, yeah, mostly I think King’s being awfully self-indulgent, but I still love the story, even if on a second reading I tend to roll my eyes a lot at Randall Flagg. On the plus side, I’ve come to appreciate Larry Underwood a lot more on the reread, mostly because nobody’s constantly telling everyone else how great he is, whereas everyone sings Stu Redman’s praises to the sky.

Initial BPAL thoughts

Cordelia: Kind of a spicy floral thing. I like it, but I don’t think it likes my skin.

Leanan Sidhe: Ooooh! I want more of this. It’s light and sweet and I totally don’t get a fabric softener vibe.

Black Annis: It’s interesting, but I haven’t tried it on yet.

Lear: I didn’t expect to love this, but I do. It smells like cedar on me. I bet it’d be great on a guy, but I could also see myself wearing this.
