What to read next
Posted by Shannon C. on January 12th, 2008 filed in book recs, musingsI feel like I’m the world’s biggest wanker, but I’m going to whine about this anyway. Despite the fact that I have books out the wazoo that I need to read, I have no idea what to start next. This always happens to me after I finish a great book, and then the next book I read gets penalized in my head for not being the last book I read.
So obviously this means the next book I read should be something that isn’t a paranormal romance, because that way I will be less likely to penalize the author for not being Meljean Brook.
Also, there’s the fact that Friday at 4:30, I received some rather upsetting news about the status of my financial aid this semester. Naturally, of course, I can’t do anything about it until Monday, so I’m trying to avoid stewing and worrying and making the problem out to be way more than it actually is. So I need a distraction. I think I really want to read something funny, so if anyone has any recs for books that made you giggle uncontrolably, please to be leaving them in the comments.

Three Questions:
Does it have to be a romance?
Does it have to be a good kind of giggle or a sort of mean giggle?
Do you like Terry Pratchet or Chris Moore?
Does that count as 4 questions? Wait. 5…

Nope, totally not.
I dunno. I like both kinds.
I do like Chris Moore. Terry Pratchett I haven’t read very much of, sadly, because the first book I tried of his, which was the first Discworld book, really didn’t work for me.

Which was it? The Terry Pratchett? Some of his are so bloody good. Others, not so much.

Well, it depends on what you’re in the mood for. Want something straight contemp, or historical. And since I’m relatively new to your blog, I have no idea what you’ve read in the past, so I don’t want to rec something you’ve already read…

The first Discworld book was essentially a string of jokes loosely held together by a plot. It’s funny if that’s your taste, but more than a couple of those and I wouldn’t have kept reading the series. It got a lot better as he went on. Common advice from the alt.fan.pratchett group is to start at Mort, Wyrd Sisters or Guards, Guards. The novels are all individual stories, but there are several different story arcs within the series that you can follow, rather than reading them in published order. Unfortunately the reading order guide has got so complicated that it’s ended up in graphic format, which makes it difficult to point a blind reader at a useful guide as it where to start depending on what sort of fantasy you like.

Reaper Man, ( I was the boot ), was my first Pratchett and I was hooked. Wyrd Sisters and Guards Guards are wonderful. Did you try his YA series? I love that Tiffany Aching…Not as laugh aloud funny (although Nac Mac Feegles are pretty humorous).
Also I thought Chris Moore’s Lamb was funny. Maybe it’s the Episcopalian in me, but I enjoyed the heck out of it.

Oh man. Lamb is the Chris Moore book I read. And I did start Wee Free Men but then stuff happened and I never finished it. Which wasn’t the book’s fault, but is again a symptom of my reader ADD.
